Chippy Games Review: Suikoden I for Playstation I
For my first game review I picked Konami’s Suikoden I . I’ve picked this game because it’s one of my favorite game in console. The series has 5 titles, two from Playstation 1 which are Suikoden 1 and 2 and three from Playstation 2 which are Suikoden 3, 4 and 5.I remember playing this Suikoden I way back when I was in high school and indeed this is one of the best I’ve played. The concept of collecting 108 warriors to fight along side with you in you epic journey and adventure. This game shows the deeper meaning of fate, destiny and friendship. Although there are other 4 series that was introduced on the market with better graphics and gameplay, this series still beats the other series when it comes to storyline and strategy battles.
The main character is Tir McDohl, son of Teo, who is one of the top generals of the Imperial Army under the authority of Emperor Barbarosa. While doing some errands as new members of the Imperial Army, Tir realizes the corruption inside the empire. During his errands, his friend Ted, bearer of a true rune showed the power of the rune “Soul Eater” to save them from danger which Windy has been searching through out the years. When Windy finally arrested Ted to get the rune from him, Ted managed to pass the rune to Tir. When the empire tried to search the whereabouts of the rune, Tir along with Cleo, Pahn and Gremio eventually meets Viktor and Odessa, resistance fighters called Liberation Army. Tir’s relation with Odessa grew and the start of Tir’s ascension to the top of the Liberation Army. Shortly after meeting her Tir became the leader of the Liberation Army.
The story of the game really begins at this point. As Tir gains the trust of Mathiu, brother of Odessa which she asked Tir to talk to Mathiu and help the Liberation Army to victory as her last wish. You also gain your headquarters (lake castle) which mark the beginning of your campain to recruit 108 stars of destiny. Throughout the story you will be fighting characters, playing mini-games and doing errands to gain their trust and recruit them to fight along side with you.
Now let’s discuss the battle scene, there are three types of battle in the game. Aforementioned duels, war battles and the 6 member party battle. Throughout the game you will usually comprise in 6 member party battle. It has simple commands: attack, cast a rune, unite attack (for 2 or more related characters with unique attack) and auto which deals with your enemies automatically. The 6 member pary battle is a turn based battle, which means you attack first then your enemies or vice versa every turn.
War battles and Duels are rare battle scenes but fun to play. Duels are obviously 1 on 1 battles that involves mainly Tir and sometimes other characters. Your enemy will have something to say and guess and relate it to either an attack, defend or a desperate attack. While war battles is more like an rock – paper – scissors type of battle scene. You use all 108 characters and they are formed in groups, some use ground troops (strong against bows) while some use bows (strong against magic) and some cast magic (strong against ground troops). There also extra groups which do special attacks like stealing potch, spying on the enemies next move and raising your attack power.
The story of the game contains war story with betrayal, friendship, passion and death. The focus to the Soul Eater rune that grants power but in exchange, friends and love ones suffer. This game trully marks as one of my all time favorite RPG games for Playstation I. This game promise a good start for the suikoden series and show a much deeper and flawless Suikoden II.
